What are Ice Dams
When melting snow and ice reach colder areas of a roof, typically overhangs, gutters, and valleys, they quickly freeze, forming a wall or block of ice. Poor roof insulation and insufficient ventilation are the major causes. When excess heat exits through the roof, snow and ice melt faster, becoming trapped by heavy snowfalls and freezing temperatures.

Problems Associated with Ice Dams
Ice dams can lead to roof leaks and have the potential to add hundreds of pounds of weight to your roof and gutters. As ice dams continue to form, ice can back-up under roof shingles, leading to damaged shingles and sheathing. Also, there is always the possibility that ice dams can break off and come crashing to the ground. Never climb onto your roof and try to shovel and/or remove snow and ice.
How to Prevent Ice Dams
Preventing ice dams is something that needs to be addressed in the spring or fall, prior to freezing temperatures and snow.
- Verify that your roof is properly insulated and ventilated.
- Clean gutters of debris.
- Seal air leaks.
- During winter, remove snow and ice around downspout to allow water to drain.
