Unit skylights are standard factory assembled products ready for installation. They come complete with glazing, retainer caps, battens, trim, gutters, flashing, gaskets, sealants, and fasteners. Unit skylights may be either non-operable or operable to allow for ventilation. Unit skylights are typically used for areas where more natural light is desired than can be achieved with windows. They add drama to a space while reducing the need for artificial light.

Topic Summary

Glazing may be single or dual acrylic or polycarbonate plastic, insulating glass, or translucent insulating panels. Plastic glazing may be flat, domed or pyramidal. Glass may be clear or tinted and laminated for safety.

Unit skylights can be provided with a perimeter frame for setting on prefabricated or field-assembled curbs or with integral insulated curbs and flashing for installation directly on the roof surface.

The exterior is usually aluminum with a high-performance coating to minimize maintenance. Inside members may be aluminum or wood.

Some unit skylights are available with adjustable blinds. Operable ventilating units may be manually-operated with removable cranks or electrically-operated, either hardwired or by remote control.

Building codes typically require unit skylights to comply with AAMA/WDMA 101/I.S.2/NAFS, North American Fenestration Standard Voluntary Performance Specification for Windows, Skylights and Glass Doors.
