The U.S. Post Office and Courthouse in South Bend, IN, designed by N. Roy Shambleau, was completed in 1933. Still in use today by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana, it was renamed in 1992 as the Robert A. Grant Federal Building and United States Courthouse. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places, meaning that modifications to the exterior are not permitted. Any modifications to the function of the building must occur in such a way that the exterior remains true to its original design.

What does geothermal mean? Geo simply means "earth", while thermal means “of, relating to, or caused by heat.” For example: hot springs = thermal waters, stress due to heat = thermal stress, and insulation retarding the flow of heat = thermal insulation.

As mentioned in the “Wallpaper Removal” article, my wife and I are currently in the process of updating our 1980’s home.  Concentrating on the kids' bathroom, we first removed all original wallpaper and selected updated paint colors and flooring.  Realizing that our dull, worn out, almond fiberglass tub was not going to fit in with our vision, we decided to look into the different refinishing and replacement options.  We also decided that if the tub was going to go, so to was the almond toilet and vanity.  Before I realized it, I was replacing everything but the rough framing.  While maintaining a positive attitude and considering our long term objectives, I began to tackle the project in my spare time while allowing the kids to use our bathroom.

Job Site Safety

It goes without saying that everyone is responsible for their own safety, but on a job site, project managers and job foremen have a responsibility to others to make sure that the work place is safe.  A great place to start is to let everyone know that safety issues are taken seriously and the primary goal is to prevent injuries and lost time.

Energy savings performance contracts (ESPCs) are an excellent way to finance capital improvements to mechanical and electrical infrastructure, if certain conditions exist. The contracts are typically awarded to an energy services company (ESCO) that can offer the most efficient new equipment installation within a predetermined payback period.

Futuristic Receptacle

One action that most inhabitants of developed countries take for granted every day is the ability to plug an electrical cord into an outlet and power up any kind of device, from a lamp to a washing machine to a laptop. While we could go on for days debating the status and future of the world’s energy sources and demand, this post is simply about what you plug that cord into.

Opened in August 2009, the Grange Insurance Audubon Center exhibits several innovative systems and unique design approaches. DesignGroup architects introduced untreated cedar siding, storefront glazing with a custom frit pattern to prevent bird strikes, exterior shading to achieve passive solar design, flexible classroom spaces, weathering steel signage, and geothermal wells with an integrated heat pump system. Following brownfield remediation, several stormwater management applications were constructed, including a vegetated roof with rainwater channeled into rain gardens and bioswales, along with a pervious pavement parking lot. Wallpaper Removal

Written by Jeff Calcamuggio Fri Nov 13 2009

A few years ago, our family moved into a home built in the 1980’s. The home has a nice exterior, other than the overgrown landscaping, and the interior plan is functional; however, the decor is original and is in need of updating. While my wife is a big fan of 80’s music, she can do without the decor from that era, and was determined on updating everything during our first month in the home.
